Hussein Mansour

Hussein Hassan Mansour (1915 – 1995) was a former Lebanese politician and MP from the Lebanese West Bekaa region.

His birth and upbringing

He was born in 1915 AD in Rashaya, from Mashghara in the western Bekaa. He received his first education in his town, surrounded by its sheikhs and its scribes, and then went on to the commercial business in which he succeeded.

His work

He actively contributed to the establishment of Beirut-Riyadh Bank and was its president and general manager for many years. He was a shareholder and partner in several major companies at the time, including the Ibrahim Company and the Land and Water Development Company. In addition, he held the position of a board member in several companies, and he also held the position of Vice-President of the Association of Bank Owners in Lebanon in 1937 AD.

 

In politics

He began his political career by affiliation with the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, and was the first to introduce the party to the town of Mashghara in the Bekaa. He was arrested by the French authorities more than once, and Maarouf Saad was introduced to Maarouf Sa`d in Mieh Wa Mieh prison, and he was imprisoned several times in the French prison Zahle.

In Procuratorate

He was elected as a representative of the Bekaa Governorate (Zahle District) in the 1960 AD session. He was re-elected for the same seat in the sessions of 1964, 1968 and 1972 AD. He continued as a member of Parliament under the extension laws due to the civil war in Lebanon until 1992 AD. During his tenure he was a member of the Committees for National Defense, Public Design, Works and Transportation, Foreign Affairs, National Economy, and Tourism. He was a member of the Bekaa Popular Bloc headed by Joseph Skaff.

In the Ministry

He was appointed as a minister in the cabinet (a minister without portfolio) on August 1, 1960, in Prime Minister Saeb Salam’s government. He was appointed Minister of Public Design in January 1969, in Prime Minister Rashid Karami’s government. Then he resigned after 3 days, and Mr. Muhammad Safi al-Din was appointed in his place.

Of his achievements

He is credited with drawing water from the Levant to the shrine of Sayyida Zainab in Damascus.

His family

He married Mrs. Inaya Mneimneh, and they have: Hassan, Samir, Hassana, Samar, Heba and Rima.

His death

He died in 1995 and was buried in the town of Mashghara.
